Atrial Fibrillation

WCA cardiologists are now offering the newest technology for treatment of atrial fibrillation or irregular rhythm by using a low-energy biphasic defibrillator for external cardioversion.

Cardioversion or defibrillation is the delivery of an electrical charge to the heart to convert certain irregular heart rhythms to normal rhythms. "This new defibrillator converts more patients at significantly lower energy levels," said James Cirbus, MD, Cardiologist.

Patients are given a general anesthesia before the treatment and recover in just a few minutes. This outpatient procedure takes place in WCA's specialized intensive care unit.

"The new defibrillator is yet another example of our commitment to providing new and innovative ways to better meet the needs of our community," stated Betsy T. Wright, CEO. "Technology is quickly changing and offering wonderful opportunities for us to continually improve patient care."
