Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, May 14,2008) – In a news conference today, officials from the WCA Hospital in Jamestown and Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in Buffalo launched a collaborative clinical program to provide enhanced radiation therapy services to cancer patients of Southwestern New York.
“This is a significant time for WCA Hospital and our patients,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO. “We are able to offer a comprehensive and integrated program that enriches patient care and continues to elevate the already high level of radiation oncology services available to our local patients in this enhanced relationship with Roswell Park.”
“Roswell Park is looking forward to implementing this new radiation care program with WCA Hospital which will expand the breadth of radiation medical care available to cancer patients and their families,” said Donald L. Trump, MD, FACP, President & CEO, RPCI. “Roswell Park believes that collaborative relationships with institutions such as WCA Hospital raise standards and quality of care for cancer patients while advancing the Roswell Park mission to bring innovative cancer therapies to surrounding communities.”
Roswell Park will provide consultative services in radiation oncology, medical physics and dosimetry to WCA Hospital. Cancer care specialists at both facilities will be linked electronically allowing for real-time development of patients' treatment plans. RPCI clinical studies also will be available to radiation medicine patients at WCA.
“More than half of all cancer patients are treated with some kind of radiation therapy during the course of their cancer treatment, making radiation therapy one of the most critical and lifesaving procedures that is provided to cancer patients,” said Michael Kuettel, MD, MBA, PhD, The Barbara C. and George H. Hyde Chair in Radiation Medicine, RPCI. “This program will add new layers of experience, knowledge and technology benefiting patients while they receive treatment close to home.”
“More people are living with cancer than ever before. Advances in radiation medicine and treatment have given more people a chance at living full lives. Partnering with Roswell Park Cancer Institute emphasizes our respective medical community’s dedication to outstanding radiation oncology care and positions us to keep pace with continuously advancing treatment practices,” said Stanley Byun, MD, Chairman, Department of Radiation Medicine, WCA. “Our joint collaboration also strengthens our commitment to building upon an already outstanding cancer care program.”
“We are committed to outstanding patient care, state-of-the-art technology and a high level of experienced physicians and staff. These are the components that continue to make WCA Hospital what it is today. Working in partnership with Roswell Park Cancer Institute reinforces our mission to deliver exceptional healthcare to the people we are so privileged to serve,” added Ms. Wright.
