Jamestown, New York (Tuesday, November 4, 2008)—The W.C.A. Foundation, Inc., recently announced the first two recipients of the Mary Lou Messina Scholarship – a Scholarship Fund established through generous donations to the W.C.A. Foundation, Inc., in memory of Mary Lou Messina, a registered nurse with a life-long dedication to the nursing profession. 2008 Award recipients are Awilda Cruz and Matthew Ring.
Each recipient receives a $250 to be used toward the cost of books for a course(s) leading to a degree in Nursing. Scholarship winner, Awilda Cruz, is a Nurses Aide at WCA Hospital and is currently enrolled in the BOCES L.P.N. Program. Matthew Ring is employed as an Orderly at WCA Hospital and is enrolled in the R.N. Nursing Program at Jamestown Community College.
The Scholarship is awarded in memory of Mary Lou Messina who was a registered nurse at WCA Hospital from 1979 until her passing in 2004. She worked as a Nurse at WCA Hospital in the Special Care Unit, Recovery Room, Pain Management Department, and Ambulatory Surgery Center. Co-workers, family, friends and patients, say Mary Lou was very dedicated to the nursing profession.
Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the nursing profession and emulate Mary Lou’s love for nursing, positive attitude, and warm, giving nature.
“Mary Lou would be proud to see these extraordinary students rewarded for their dedication to the nursing profession,” said Phil Messina, husband of the late Mary Lou Messina. “Mary Lou had healing hands and a healing heart. She loved what she did and she could set her patients at ease with her laughter and her smile. Mary Lou’s love for nursing was only outweighed by her love for our family and friends. By establishing this scholarship program, we keep her memory and her love for people alive by serving as an anchor for students who are dedicated to the nursing field.”
To qualify for the Scholarship Program, applicants must be employed as a nurses aide, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, orderly, or technician at WCA Hospital for one year, and interested in advancing and continuing their education in the field of nursing.
“On behalf of the members of the Foundation Board, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients for their dedicated work and achievements,” said Mrs. Florence Cass, W.C.A. Foundation, Inc., Executive Director. “Through the Mary Lou Messina Scholarship Program listing, the Foundation commemorates our donors who provided support to these students, in their own special way. We look forward to the accomplishments of these distinguished students.”
