Jamestown, New York (Wednesday, May 5, 2016)—WCA Hospital is pleased to announce that Jessica L. Cappa, BSN, WCA Hospital Emergency Department nurse, was named the “2016 Nurse of Distinction” at a special breakfast held in celebration of National Nurses Week.

The distinguished tradition at WCA Hospital began in 1989 when Elaine Hoglin was selected the first Nurse of Distinction. WCA Hospital awards the distinction to an outstanding Registered Nurse who exemplifies the mission and vision of WCA Hospital. The award is given to a nurse who displays outstanding achievement; is a role model; possesses professional standards and leadership skills; is an advocate for healthcare and the nursing profession; and is involved in his or her community. The honoree is nominated by his or her colleagues and selected by the Nurse of Distinction Committee comprised of recipients from previous years.

“We have a long tradition of great nurses that provide great care and I feel very lucky when I look around this room as I believe everyone deserves this honor,” said Emelia Lindquist-Harley, MSN, WCA Hospital director of nursing and emergency department nurse manager who gave the opening remarks at the celebration.

“We come together this morning to recognize nurses’ contributions and commitment to our patients and the impact on the lives of those they serve in the community. Today, we recognize the distinguished work of Jessica who sets the bar high for her colleagues. She is a hardworking, professional, and passionate individual. She is incredibly proud to be part of this hospital and continuously works at improving professional practice, not just in the Emergency Department, but throughout the hospital. She is a role model of compassion, caring, and advocacy. She’s my friend, my colleague, and my fellow teddy bear clinic coordinator and I am grateful to stand next to her today in celebration of the wonderful woman she has become.”

Other nomination remarks on behalf of Jessica stated she is a trained, knowledge professional with lots of ambition. A team player, remarks also included that Jessica is a team player who reaches out to others in need with an attitude of patience, kindness, and compassion toward her patients, families and co-workers.

“I am at a loss for words,” said Jessica who began her career at WCA Hospital in June 14, 1999, when she accepted the position as a graduate nurse. “I truly appreciate everything and everyone who has taught me the utmost importance of being a nurse. I want to thank everybody who has ever shared their expertise, know-how, and knowledge with me. I would not be the person I am today without you.”

Jessica resides in Jamestown, New York, with husband, Brett. She has three children, Kaylee, Jacey, and Ellie.

A graduate of the nursing program at Jamestown Community College, in August of 1997, she accepted a position as a graduate nurse at WCA Hospital on June 14, 1999, after earning her Bachelor of Nursing BS (RN to BS Program) Degree from Daemen College. Committed to bedside nursing on the 5D Nursing Unit at WCA, she transferred to the Emergency Department in September of 2000.
