WCA UPMC Continue Regulatory Steps Toward a New Era in Health Care

Jamestown, New York (Thursday, June 9, 2016)—Six months after WCA Hospital and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) announced an affiliation agreement to integrate services and bring world-class medical care to southern Chautauqua County, New York State has given contingency approval for the two organizations to integrate. The next regulatory steps include approvals from the New York State Office of Mental Health and Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

The Public Health and Health Planning Council Establishment and Project Review subcommittee (PHHPC) of New York State and Public Health and Health Planning Council voted today to approve WCA and UPMC’s application to form an integration between the two systems.

“We are very excited and appreciative of the state’s approval to move forward,” said Betsy T. Wright, FACHE, WCA Hospital President/CEO. “This is a great day for WCA and UPMC and more importantly, the citizens that we are so privileged to serve in southern Chautauqua County. We are one more step closer to the integration of the two health systems. We continue to work through the final regulatory process which is contingent upon approvals from the New York State Office of Mental Health and New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.”

The boards of directors of WCA Hospital and UPMC announced a formal affiliation agreement to integrate WCA Hospital into the UPMC network on December 17, 2015. The agreement set forth the shared visions of WCA Hospital and UPMC to meet the challenges of today’s transformational changes in the health care industry by accessing UPMC’s technological resources, expertise, and capabilities, to preserve access to local health care and grow world-class health care services locally for years to come. Pending regulatory approvals, the affiliation will bring together high-performing organizations with a shared vision to create an exceptional health care delivery system that is focused on world-class health care.

Steven Kilburn, WCA Hospital Board of Directors chair, commented, “We believe that this decision today ensures that high-quality health care remains in southern Chautauqua County for years to come and establishes long-term stability for our patients and their families who have come to expect excellent health care locally.”

Wright added, “We are thankful for the work that is being accomplished on the regulatory front on our behalf and we remain enthusiastic that we can finalize the details of the affiliation agreement by the late summer or year end.”
