UPMC Chautauqua WCA Provided $6 Million in Community Benefits Last Year

JAMESTOWN, NY, Aug. 30, 2017 – UPMC Chautauqua WCA provided nearly $6 million in IRS-defined community benefits last year, an average of more than $16,000 a day for programs and services to improve the health and quality of life of all the communities UPMC Chautauqua WCA serves. The $6 million total includes:

On a national level, UPMC’s community contributions exceed those of other top medical centers in terms of percentage of net patient revenue. The newly published UPMC Community Benefits Report 2016-2017 details how UPMC provided more care to western Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens than any other health care institution.  Including UPMC Susquehanna and UPMC Chautauqua WCA, both of which affiliated with UPMC in Fiscal Year 2017, brings UPMC’s annual community benefits to $960 million—or $2.6 million a day.

With a total economic impact of $30 billion, UPMC operations have a multiplier effect that ripples benefits through local economies. Every dollar spent by the system to improve facilities and expand services has more than twice the economic impact. According to a 2017 HANYS Economic & Community Impact Report, UPMC Chautauqua WCA had an annual impact of $196,000,000 on the local economy through jobs and purchases of goods and services through local vendors.

“We preserve health care access for the region’s most vulnerable populations,” said Betsy T. Wright, FACHE, president, UPMC Chautauqua WCA.  “While it is understood that hospitals across the U.S. provide vital health care services to millions of people to thousands of communities like ours, the significance of health care to our local economy is less understood.  In addition to providing critical health care and specific programs that meet the community’s needs, UPMC Chautauqua WCA is considered an economic engine, extending itself far beyond its role as the cornerstone of health care.”
