Jamestown – WCA Hospital will offer a four-week Recreational Exercise Program designed specifically for people with arthritis from April 16th through May 11th. The Sessions will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Jones Memorial Health Center Conference Room on Glasgow Avenue.
The program is called PACE, an acronym for "People with Arthritis Can Exercise". Instructor for the course is Mary Bohall, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant at WCA Hospital. The Arthritis Foundation developed the PACE Program, which is designed to teach participants to do special exercises which will benefit them and they can continue to do at home. Emphasis is placed on participant education, muscle strengthening, range of motion exercise, body mechanics and relaxation techniques.
Adults with any type of arthritis may participate in the PACE Program with the consent of his/her physician. Participants may also include those who walk with the assistance of walkers, canes, etc., and those in wheelchairs (who must be able to transfer to a straight-backed chair). The fee for the four-week program is $40, which includes materials and supplies. For applications or more information, call the WCA Occupational Therapy Department at (716) 664-8656.
