"The Wound Care Center is an outstanding example of how WCA serves the public with the best in patient care," said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President and CEO. "With the addition of the new center, we are able to extend our surgical program by delivering the latest in wound care treatments. The added service supports our mission to continually improve the health of the region, while building a strong medical community that is responsive to the current and future needs of those we serve."
According to national statistics, approximately 5 million Americans live with chronic non-healing wounds. The majority of chronic wounds are associated with diabetes and poor circulation, especially in the feet and legs.
The Wound Care Center is a comprehensive program that combines the latest in treatment, education, and support to promote healing and get patients back to their day-to-day lives. The type and severity of the wound determines the individualized treatment plan. A plan may include one of several options including: surgery, antibiotics, medications, topical therapies, compression garments, and prosthetics or orthotics to enhance mobility and quality of life. The staff can link patients to other excellent WCA services such as nutrition counseling, tobacco cessation, exercise options and management for chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer and poor circulation, as well as, preventing infection and immobility.
"It is the goal of the Center and our treatment team to prevent infections and promote wound healing," said Tim Brown, M.D., general and vascular surgeon on staff at WCA and Clinical Director at the Center. "Our team has extensive experience in caring for the medical needs of patients with problematic, non-healing wounds. The Wound Care Center will provide effective treatment and a wide range of specialty services all centralized in one location at WCA Hospital."
"When patients suffer from a wound, they need to get it treated immediately," says Mark Tuccio, DPM, FACFAS, Podiatrist on staff at WCA Hospital. "Patients with wound problems related to diabetes, vein and artery problems, or pressure ulcers can benefit from our multi-disciplinary approach from evaluation and diagnosis to treatment."
"Our Center also teaches patients how to care for their wounds while understanding how proper nutrition and exercises can aid in the healing process and prevent future wounds or ulcers," adds Anthony Tuccio, DPM, FACFAS, Podiatrist at The Wound Care Center.
Successful wound healing is dependent on the utilization of a team approach.
A multi-specialty team of board certified surgeons, podiatrists, radiologists and a certified Wound Care Nurse is on staff at The Wound Care Center. Consultants on staff include: infectious disease specialists, certified diabetes educators, registered dietitians, licensed physical therapists and a registered nurse wellness specialist.
"The Wound Care Center truly is a multifaceted group of medical experts coming together in one easily accessible location to deliver the finest in patient care, effectively and efficiently," said Dr. Mark Tuccio.
