The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality of cancer through education, standard-setting, and monitoring the quality of cancer care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 37 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care. The Commission's core functions include setting standards for quality, multidisciplinary cancer patient care and cancer data collection at over 1,400 approved facilities, surveying those facilities to evaluate compliance with the standards, and using the data to develop effective interventions to improve cancer care outcomes at the national, state, and local level. Twenty-two percent of the hospitals in the United States have cancer programs approved by the Commission on Cancer and 82% of newly diagnosed cancer patients are treated in these institutions.
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer sets the gold standard for cancer care across the nation. The Commission recently awarded WCA Hospital's cancer care program a three-year approval with commendation. Only one in four hospitals across the nation earn this high status and only a small percentage of the hospitals have received commendation.
"It's about how we care for the patient," says Dr. Glotzer, who provides leadership and support to the Approvals Program. "The Certificate of Approval gives patients peace of mind that the place they receive their care has set the standard of excellence."
