Johnson Foundation Supports WCA Emergency Care

Leonard Franco, MD and Bonnie Stockwell, Nurse Manager review a patient radiology image on the new PACS viewing station in the WCA Emergency Department. Two stations were purchased with funds donated by the Johnson Foundation.

Jamestown, N.Y., June 7, 2007A generous donation from the Johnson Foundation is benefiting patients and staff in the WCA Hospital Emergency Department (ED). WCA recently installed a complex computer system that allows physicians to view precise x-rays from multiple locations throughout the hospital, physician offices and from other regional centers. The system is called PACS, a picture archiving and communication system. It stores, retrieves, displays, and distributes high quality radiology images.

Part of the Johnson Foundation donation was used to purchase two PACS viewing stations for convenient use by the emergency department providers. "We truly appreciate the support of the Johnson Foundation for our ED," said Betsy T. Wright, WCA President/CEO. "We have a very busy department, with close to 40,000 visits each year. The PACS system can directly improve timeliness of treatment, which is important to our patients and to our focus on quality care. This truly enhances the technology available to our patients."

PACS provides user friendly and highly secure web access to images from virtually any location with an internet connection. Multiple providers can view the images at the same time. This creates the opportunity for providers to discuss a patient's condition and treatment plan without having to be in the same location. "We no longer have to wait for x-ray films to be developed and transported," said Leonard Franco, MD, emergency physician at WCA Hospital. "Within moments we can view images, consult with the radiologist, make a diagnosis and begin treatment. It's a wonderful time saver and improves patient care."

The John Alfred and Oscar Johnson Memorial Trust supports charitable, religious and educational programs, as well as, those of Swedish heritage. For more information about the Foundation contact Carole Sellstrom, Executive Director at 484-7190.
