JAMESTOWN, NY – Cancer patients in Southwestern New York will have access to expanded and enhanced state-of-the-art radiation therapy services as a result of an agreement announced today by WCA Hospital of Jamestown, New York, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
WCA Hospital, a regional healthcare provider, has entered into an affiliation agreement with Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York. The WCA Hospital Radiation Oncology Facility will be operated in collaboration with RPCI.
“Over the years, Roswell Park has developed a close relationship with the physicians and leadership team at WCA, and we have been impressed with their commitment to the region’s cancer patients,” said Donald L. Trump, MD, President & CEO, RPCI. “We are delighted to formalize our relationship through this agreement which will afford cancer patients access to high quality, technologically advanced radiation therapy services.”
“This agreement allows WCA, as a regional healthcare provider, to continue to grow and expand to meet the ever changing needs of our community,” said Betsy Wright, President & CEO, WCA. “The purpose of the landmark affiliation is to offer a comprehensive and integrated program together with Roswell Park that enriches patient care and elevates the level of radiation oncology care already available to our patients.”
“Working with Roswell Park furthers our mission to improve the health and well being of the people we serve,” added Mrs. Barbara Bumsted, Chair, WCA Hospital Board of Directors.
Details of the affiliation include:
- An upgrade of the WCA radiation oncology facility, including the purchase of state-of-the-art technology.
- A full-time, on-site radiation oncologist to work closely with RPCI faculty in planning treatments and to ensure the quality of treatment delivery at WCA.
- Consultative services by RPCI staff in such areas as radiation oncology, medical physics and dosimetry services.
- Electronic teleconferencing between WCA and RPCI cancer care specialists enabling the development of patient treatment plans.
- Collaborations to ensure the availability of radiation oncology services at WCA, such as stereotactic brain/body radiation, high-dose rate brachytherapy and image-guided radiation therapy to treat all cancers that respond to radiation therapy, including prostate, breast, head and neck, lung, colorectal and brain tumors.
- Clinical protocols developed by RPCI to ensure that patients at WCA receive the same radiation medicine services as patients at RPCI.
“By working collaboratively, the two institutions hope to increase the on-site availability of innovative radiation oncology cancer therapies at WCA, thereby giving patients more opportunities to choose treatment options that may offer improved outcomes,” said Michael Kuettel, MD, MBA, PhD, Chairman, Department of Radiation Medicine, RPCI.
“Partnering emphasizes our respective medical community’s dedication to outstanding radiation oncology care and positions us to keep pace with continuously advancing treatment practices,” said Stanley Byun, MD, Chairman, Department of Radiation Medicine, WCA. “Joint collaboration reinforces our commitment to building upon an already outstanding cancer program,” added Jarius Ibabao, MD, Chairman, Cancer Treatment Committee, WCA.
According to Wolf-Dieter Krahn, MD, President, WCA Hospital Medical Staff, there’s often a need to integrate all aspects of cancer care for patients receiving radiation oncology treatments, which requires collaboration across the entire medical community. “Through cooperation, we can enhance our ability to coordinate care both locally and regionally,” he said.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute also has affiliate agreements with Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY; Rochester General Hospital, Rochester, NY; and Bradford Regional Medical Center, Bradford, PA.
