What is Robotic Surgery?

In the hands of our hospital's surgeons, the new da Vinci® Surgical System at UPMC Chautauqua offers an alternative to traditional open surgery as well as conventional forms of minimally invasive surgery. The Surgical System is a robotic platform that expands the surgeon’s capabilities to perform the most delicate microsurgical procedures.

Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive surgery refers to the practice of performing surgical procedures through a series of small "keyhole" incisions. Employing robotic technology, these minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic procedures can lessen the physical impact of surgery on the patient.

When performing surgery with the robotic surgical system, these miniaturized instruments are mounted on robotic arms, allowing the surgeon maximum range of motion and precision. The robot contains a magnified high-definition 3-D camera that guides the surgeon during the procedure. The surgeon controls these instruments and the camera from a console located in the operating room. Placing his or her fingers into the master controls, the surgeon is able to operate the arms of the robot simultaneously while looking through a stereoscopic high-definition monitor that literally places the surgeon inside the patient, giving him an enhanced and detailed 3-D view of the operating site than the human eye can provide. Every movement the surgeon makes with the master controls is replicated precisely by the robot.

What are the patient benefits of Robotic Surgery?

Unlike laparoscopic surgery, which is typically limited to relatively simple procedures, robot-assisted surgery can be used for more complex surgeries. That is because the Robot offers additional enhancements for the surgeon that mean more precise removal of diseased tissue.

• A better view through 3-Dimensional Magnification.

The high-definition camera captures depth perception unavailable using standard laparoscopy. The camera magnifies images up to 10 times that which can be seen with the human eye.

• Enhanced dexterity

The robotic arms, equipped with miniature instruments, can turn 360 degrees, rotating and bending as the surgeon dictates. This dexterity allows the instruments to navigate inside the human body in ways that a human hand cannot. A special wrist joint at the tip of the surgical instruments enhances the ability to perform subtle, complex movements around delicate areas while cutting.
