Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
If you're an individual who has been diagnosed with heart disease - commonly referred to as coronary artery disease, the WCA Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Program could be just what you need to get back on your feet and feeling good again. It's true, medically supervised exercise can be beneficial. Our personalized program includes exercise as well as education about heart healthy living. There are different levels available and different time slots available.
What is Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac Rehab is an outpatient program for anyone recently diagnosed with heart disease, or recovering from a recent cardiac event. Cardiac rehab provides the knowledge, tools and support needed to succeed in leading a heart healthier lifestyle. In addition to supervised exercise, education, encouragement, and emotional support are offered throughout the program, providing assistance in better management of risk factors in secondary prevention.
Who is eligible for Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Anyone who has had any of the following conditions:
- Coronary bypass surgery
- Heart valve replacement or repair
- Heart attack
- Balloon angioplasty or stenting
- Heart or lung transplant
- Other heart related conditions or procedures
Main elements of our program:
The cardiac rehab program is three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Several class times are available throughout the day to provide convenient scheduling options. Each session is approximately one hour in length with an additional educational 30 minute session every Wednesday. This education gives you an opportunity to share information and address any questions you may have in order to learn how to decrease your risk of cardiovasular disease in the future.
A low-level stress test and brief physical examination by a Supervising Cardiologist on staff at the WCA will be completed before cardiac rehab begins. This will give staff essential information to develop an individualized exercise plan that meets your personal goals. We will review your medical history and current medications with you.
During each cardiac rehab session, you will be evaluated by the use of continuous EKG monitoring, blood pressure, and oxygen readings. Our staff will ask about any changes in medication or any problems since your last visit. Stretching and warm-up exercises will start your session, followed by the use of treadmills, stationary or recumbent bicycles, air-dyne rowing machine, stair master, arm ergometers, and hand weights.
A specialized heart team:
Our team of board certified cardiologists, experienced cardiology registered nurses, dietitians and pharmacists will work together in providing personal, compassionate and quality care that will assist you in transitioning to a heart healthy lifestyle. Your physician and other healthcare providers will be updated on your progress throughout your participation in the program.
Your cardiac rehab program can typically last up to six to 12 weeks in duration.
