Jamestown, New York (Friday, June 5, 2009)—WCA Hospital Occupational Therapy and Wellness team and the SALT and TRIAD coalitions will host a CarFit Event – an educational program that offers senior drivers the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them, on Tuesday, June 16th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.. The program will be held at the Jones Memorial Health Center (JMHC) Parking Lot area, located at 51 Glasgow Avenue, Jamestown. Limited reservations available; to register, contact Patricia Truax at (716) 664-8410.
At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and healthcare professionals work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The CarFit program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community.
WCA Hospital Occupational Therapist and trained CarFit technician, Linda Randall, OTR/L, will work one-on-one with the senior driver to help adjust the steering wheel, mirrors, and seats of the vehicle. “As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even height may make us less comfortable and reduce our control behind the wheel,” said Randall. “The CarFit program gives the driver a brief but comprehensive check of how well the driver and the vehicle work together.”
CARFIT was developed by AARP, the American Automobile Association and the American Occupational Association.
