Treating Obesity with Weight-Loss Surgery
Obesity can be very difficult to treat. When other medically-supervised methods fail, bariatric surgery can offer patients an option for long-term weight control for those with clinically severe obesity.
Weight loss surgery has been shown to be an effective tool to help people with morbid obesity achieve and maintain a healthier weight. The UPMC Chautauqua WCA Bariatric Center offers a full range of surgical options to meet a patient’s individual needs.
Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).
The UPMC Chautauqua WCA Bariatric Center is led by Galo A. Grijalva, MD,FACS. He is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in minimally invasive general surgery as well as Robotic and Bariatric surgery with years of experience.

Meet Our Staff
Galo Grijalva, MD, FACS, Board-Certified Surgeon
Galo A. Grijalva, MD, FACS, board-certified surgeon and credentialed robotic surgeon, is an experienced minimally invasive surgeon with a passion for bariatrics. After graduating with Honors from Transylvania University in Lexington, KY, he attended and graduated West Virginia University School of Medicine. His residency training was at a busy hospital in Brooklyn NY, after which he spent 6 years as an active duty surgeon in the United States Air Force. He was fortunate to forge an association with Creighton University and developed expertise in minimally invasive anti-reflux and foregut surgery. This allowed him to open an esophageal testing lab and to perform many advanced laparoscopic cases at the 55th Medical Group at Offutt AFB. During his next assignment at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton OH, he co-developed and opened one of the first Bariatric Programs in the Air Force which remains open today. After being honorably discharged with the rank of Major, Dr. Grijalva continued to gain experience in Bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and now Robotic surgery. He believes bariatric surgery allows the development of a much closer and rewarding patient-doctor relationship. Being part of the positive life changes afforded by bariatric surgery to patients is why bariatrics is so satisfying and why he continues to pursue and practice this continually evolving branch of surgery.
A specialist in minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, Dr. Grijalva brings years of experience and a broad range of surgical skills, specializing in general surgery with expertise in several areas including single-incision laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery. An experienced, highly-skilled surgeon, he performs a wide range of laparoscopic general surgery procedures using the revolutionary technology at UPMC Chautauqua WCA of the newly acquired robotic daVinci® Surgical System. Surgeries include, but are not limited to, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, anti-reflux surgery, colorectal surgery, all types of hernia repairs, gastrointestinal malignancies, oncology procedures, splenectomy, and other general surgery procedures.
