New Frontiers in Surgery at WCA Hospital
Board certified general and vascular surgeons, on staff at WCA Hospital, are on the forefront of the latest surgical advances that allow patients to reap the benefits of minimally invasive techniques for many surgical procedures. These surgeons, nationally recognized for their surgical outcomes, are leading the way to bring minimally invasive surgery (also called Laparoscopic surgery) to area patients.
"Minimally invasive surgery advancements take surgery into the future," said Timothy Brown, MD, FACS, who performed the first laparoscopic adrenalectomy, spleenectomy, and incisional hernia repair at WCA Hospital. "These technologically sophisticated advances enable us to make a quantum leap in our efforts to provide high level surgical care for our patients."
What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery is performing surgery through the smallest incisions that surgeons can make. Though the procedure is minimal, the benefits to the patients are huge. Minimally invasive surgery causes less trauma, less pain, and most importantly, a quicker recovery for our patients. It is a highly technical, less-invasive approach to traditional surgery. With minimally invasive surgery, patients are discharged sooner and may return to work and normal activities within days of surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgeries at WCA
The WCA Hospital Surgical Program offers a wide range of minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgeries including, inguinal, incisional and umbilical hernia repair, laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery, and minimally invasive orthopedic, ear, nose, throat, kidney, and lung surgery.
Ichabod Jung, MD, board certified urologist at WCA Hospital performed the first laparoscopic removal of a kidney (nephrectomy) in southwestern New York. Once again, this new method for removal of a kidney allows for a very small incision compared to an incision of ten to twelve inches.
Thoracoscopy is another minimally invasive technique at WCA that uses a miniature video camera and a few specific instruments to perform chest surgery that results in several small incisions and minimal tissue disruption. Dr. David DiMarco, a board certified thoracic surgeon performs lung surgery using this highly technical procedure. "Traditional lung surgery requires the chest to be opened," said Dr. DiMarco. "This is a very painful and can have numerous complications. Thoracoscopy is equivalent to laparoscopy for abdominal surgery. The benefits of Thoracoscopy to the patient are many. It is a safer procedure for high risk patients, the recovery time is faster, there's much less post-operative pain and fewer complications."
Dr. Brown explains that minimally invasive hernia repair is one of the most common laparoscopic surgical procedures that returns patients to normal activities quickly. "Laparoscopic hernia repair possesses a number of advantages over traditional hernia surgery," says Dr. Brown. "It's performed as an outpatient procedure with small incisions that allow the physician to repair the defect from the inside. The procedure takes less than an hour, and patients experience a rapid recovery and lower chance of recurrence."
WCA also has one of the busiest orthopedic programs in western New York and has received national recognition for its quality outcomes. Orthopedic surgeons on staff are leading the way in new innovative laparoscopic hip surgery and what is called the uni-knee or partial replacement of the knee with a specialized prosthesis.
WCA Surgical Program Leads The Way
Technology is enabling major advances all around us. This is especially true in the field of healthcare. New surgical operating suites at WCA Hospital enable surgeons to treat a targeted area of the body while minimizing the amount of trauma to healthy surrounding tissue and organs.

We're Only A Phone Call Away
Minimally invasive surgery offers the potential to perform operations with less pain and quicker recovery, but it is not appropriate for all surgeries. Talk to your physician who will advise you in which cases it may be the best choice.
